Wartime Valentine: A WWII Soldier's Love Letter

I found this letter (written during World War II from my father to my mother) in the packages of letters she kept all her life. She kept every letter and card he gave her.

Valentine’s was always special for these two and they always made certain it was special for each other.

I remember my dad always had a Valentine card for my mom and made a special effort for her on that day.

My Mother died early in the morning on Feb.15, with his name on her lips and a smile reserved only for my dad.

In all the letters he wrote to her this was the most romantic, though he always called her Lady:

My Dear Lady,

I know this letter won’t reach you before Valentine’s It has been dreary and boring and I am feeling very lonely even though around here there are lots of people. The worst part of it is missing you every day. Every day we are apart the loneliness seems to get worse.

I had to wait to write this until the Sally Ann (Salvation Army) came by with paper and envelopes, both are hard to come by. They also brought socks and cigarettes. All given to us.

The Red Cross always sells these things. So as soon as I could I lined up for all three. My socks were holey and I needed cigarettes and paper so I could write to you, my love.

We are busy, but as it is all the same, old thing. I wish I could tell you about where I am and what we are doing but that is impossible as you know, being in the army yourself. Rest assured that I think about you often every day oh and the nights are the hardest.

I am sorry that we can’t celebrate Valentine’s like we used to, I know I will be reliving those wonderful times all day. I hope you will do the same. I promise that I will make these missed times up to you when I finally get home, and we are together. I love you so, so much. I promise I will always make the day special for us.

I love you and can never think about home without you also being in my thoughts and dreams. I want you to always remember that. I love you so much. Happy Valentines Day, sweet Lady mine.

Love, P.
